Ichiro’s Malt Chichibu On The Way Japanese Single Malt Whisky bottled in 2013.
Owner; Ventura Whisky.
Location; Chichibu, Sailtama Prefecture.
Founded; 2008. Capacity 80,000 litres.
Japan’s latest distillery. The first to be built since 1973. The distillery is located in the town of Chichibu. Close to the city of Saitama and about 2 hours by train, North West of Tokyo.
The ambition of Chichibu’s founder Ichiro Akuto was to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps and build and operate a whisky distillery. His grandfather established the Hanyu distillery in 1946. The Hanyu distillery went out of production in 2000, since dismantled.
Ichiro Akuto owns most of the remaining Hanyu whisky stock. He bottles and releases these under the ‘Ichiro’s Malt’ label. Akuto intends to continue bottling this Hanyu stock while the new whisky from Chichibu is maturing.
Chichibu’s Whisky Distillery.
Ichiro Akuto started planning the Chichibu distillery in 2007. After selecting the site and in keeping with a local tradition. To bring good luck and fortune. A Shinto priest needs to bless the ground upon which the distillery is to be built.
The distillery equipment came from Scotland. With the exception of the mash tun that came from a local brewery. The bottling plant and warehouse completed in rapid time and production of whisky started in the Spring of 2008.
