Wemyss Malt Whiskys
Are carefully created by the Scottish family Wemyss, pronounced 'Weems', derived from the Gaelic word for caves which stems from the rocky outcrop on the Firth of Forth on which the family home, Wemyss Castle is located.
Looking back towards Edinburgh, the castle has been the family seat for over six centuries.
The Wemyss family have had a longstanding passion for malt whisky and their connections with the industry date back to the turn of the 19th century when John Haig (founder of Haig's) built his first distillery on Wemyss land.
Even today barley from the Wemyss Estate is prized by many of the leading distillers, and Cameron Bridge distillery is located just a few miles from the castle itself.
With many years’ experience in crafting high quality wines, combined with the family's passion for whisky, a handcrafted range of malt whiskies seemed the logical choice.
With this passion came the gradual realisation that, even for the knowledgeable consumer, much of the malt whisky terminology can be confusing. The range of hand crafted malts was conceived with the aim of making them more accessible and understandable.
The Company use the taste and aromas of the individual whiskies to identify each bottling, rather than the distillery, so the consumer can more easily understand the style being purchased.
At Wemyss Malts they choose the best malt whisky casks that the industry has to offer – achieved by having a 'Nosing Panel' to examine and sample the many different casks available. In effect what the wine industry calls a 'negociant'- choosing, blending and bottling a small number of very fine casks.
The Nosing Panel is chaired by industry character and aficionado Charlie Maclean, author of no less than eight books on the subject. Having carefully selected suitable casks they are then designate for either the blended malt range or, if they're considered of outstanding quality, the Single Cask range. All the whiskies are identified by their natural taste and aromas.
Wemyss Blended Malts
With the family's premium wine background they have long been aware of the practice of blending specially selected wines to create unique expressions. When they established Wemyss Malts they wanted to take that philosophy forward into the whiskies they produced, blending a small number of very fine casks so the end result was a marriage of flavours and aromas that were beautifully balanced and greater than the sum of its parts.
