Our History
1960
Mr John Long and his son Peter who both originated from Leeds founded the family business on The first of January 1960.
In Stamford Bridge they established a tobacconists and sweet shop. This was followed by acquiring the local CO-OP.
1966
On Mr J Long's retirement in 1966 Peter took over the running of the business and in 1970, the CO-OP, which had by then become a Spar shop; was sold.
1976
In 1976 the eldest son Martin joined the family firm and in 1985 added a hardware shop to the company portfolio. Andrew, the youngest son, joined in 1981 developing a cycle shop in 1988.
1992
The year 1992 was a major development year as the business premises leases were up for renewal; a decision to relocate and buy a local freehold was taken.
1993
This was a supermarket with an off licence. We retained the off licence and in 1993 Andrew started to develop the off licence with the main feature of high quality wines and spirits, quickly developing a reputation for quality and choice away from the every day Supermarket range.
1995
The specialist whisky department was opened in 1995 and can now boast a selection of over 600 whiskies in stock at all times.
1999
In 1999 the domain names whiskymerchants.co.uk and whiskys.co.uk were registered and developed in to the present web site
1999
In March 1999 we suffered a major flood that put 26 inches of the River Derwent in the shop. It took 3 months to reopen. In November 2000 the river beat its earlier record with 33 inches in the shop. We re-opened within 2 weeks.
Don’t worry we only let you add water to our whisky
In our trading history we have had 19 serious floods (6 inches or more) So we know how to protect the water of life.
