Hazelburn Rundlets & Kilderkins Casks.
The Rundlets & Kilderkins refer to the barrel sizes used during maturation. 15 and 18 gallons (Imperial) respectively.
These Casks are quite a bit smaller than the normal hogshead (2/7ths and 1/3rd the size).
Or a bourbon barrel (3/5ths and 2/3rds the size).
The maturing spirit gets more wood contact, allowing it to get more influence from the wood and thus ‘mature’ faster.
Springbank was the first distillery in Scotland to distill and bottle three different types of malt whisky :
Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn using three different production methods.
The malt is dried for 6 hours over a peat fire. Then a further 24 hours over hot air.
Distilled two and a half times.
By far the peatiest of Springbank’s whiskies, first distilled in 1973.
The malt is dried for 48 hours over a peat fire. To give its big smoky character.
The malt is dried over hot air only, no peat at all.
The Springbank distillery is also unique amongst Scotland’s distilleries in that all parts of the production process. From the traditional floor malting, all the way to bottling, are carried out in one location.
None of the malts are chill filtered and no caramel is added.
