In 2017, the Isle of Raasay's inaugural distillery officially opened, led by R&B Distillers. The historic Borodale House was renovated into a distillery, visitor center, and hotel for the ambitious project. Unfortunately, construction was briefly halted upon discovering a rare population of Brown long-eared bats nesting in the roof. However, with the help of an expert, playfully nicknamed "Batman" by the company, the bats were safely relocated to nearby trees and construction continued. The distillery boasts two pot stills imported from Italy and has the capacity to produce 150,000 bottles annually, with all maturation taking place on-site at Borodale House. The first bottles of young spirit were released in 2017 and in the winter of 2020, the very first legal single malt Scotch whisky from the isle was finally launched.
This peated spirit has been matured in a first-fill ex-Tennessee cask before being finished in a first-fill ex-Bordeaux Red Wine barrel. It has been bottled at cask strength and natural colour. The unique glass bottle features fossils and rocks from the island moulded into the glass.
